ABOUT ME

My name is Olivia Parchment. I am a BA(Hons) Fine Arts graduate from Bath Spa University. I've been drawing from a young age and art was always one of my passions in life and it was what I saw myself indulging in as a career. My art work is mostly based on portraiture but I have dabbled in other art fields such as photography and ideas of design.

Whilst using the basic knowledge of drawing I am currently working on a project based on observations of black women. I'll be investigating ideas how characteristics can affect a portrait. Exploring definitions of portraiture, expanding my practice by undertaking tasks that challenge my ability as an artist and as a creative; using different mediums and materials.

Within my practice I noticed that I was drawing predominantly white women. It was what I saw as beautiful and I came to the conclusion as to why I had not looked at my own culture (Black-Caribbean) and what beauty lies within that. I looked at the work of Sonia Boyce who is known for exploring art as a social practice and the debates that arise from that area of study, much like Renee Green. These artists both looked at black culture and what it meant to them. Even though they are artists who have different practices to myself, the subject matter is much the same.

This website chronicles my journey and exploration of these subjects from 2015 to present.
